Orchestral Bowing Service

YES! It is 'more' than just down/up! Uniform bowings within each section and across the string section as a whole (as much as possible) are not just for the visual effect, but for consistency in sound, articulations, phrasing, and furthermore, bow distribution and usage. The advanced player will naturally know how to navigate articulations and/or pacing for phrasing, but many student and amateur players will need guidance (from proper bowings) to place themselves in the appropriate part of the bow to successfully execute these musical markings (sometimes, but not always, indicated by the composer or arranger). Proper bowings will analyze phrases, knowing when strong and weak beats occur, while also making decisions to create more "comfortable" bowings for the string player. OBS bowings are designed to provide a service to professional orchestras while also keeping in mind the details needed for a student or amateur orchestra.

SOMETIMES. Typically "graded" works for school ensembles will have adequate bowings and string edits already marked. Typically "professional" works will not. Sometimes rental parts will have bowings from a past performance by another orchestra. Regardless, it is always a good idea to assess bowings well in advance of the first rehearsal. A first reading without proper bowings will bring confusion and frustration to your string section, and waste a large amount of time in rehearsal(s)!

Conductors (professional, university/college, opera, ballet, youth, community/amateur), school orchestra directors, string music publishers, choir directors conducting works with orchestra, orchestra executive directors, concertmasters (or other section leaders) wanting to save time, among others! Recognizing there are often multiple ways to bow a phrase, OBS bowings can also serve as a starting point for those wanting to experiment with different options, or for school directors to provide leadership opportunities for students to develop this skill.
